Permanent Hot-Mix Patching for Commercial Properties Across Northern Utah

In the Ogden, UT area and the surrounding communities of Logan, Layton, Brigham City, and beyond, Blacktop Paving LLC handles asphalt patching for property managers, business owners, and commercial property owners who need failed pavement areas fixed correctly. Our crews work across the region installing hot-mix asphalt patches that bond properly, compact cleanly, and don’t end up as the next contractor’s clean-up project a year later.

Patching seems straightforward, but it’s one of the services we see done badly most often. Cold-patch material that lasts a few months. Patches that aren’t squared up. Inadequate compaction. Owner Brian Blackner has spent more than 15 years correcting the patching mistakes other contractors have left across Northern Utah — and that experience drives our standard for every patch we install.

Common Problems We Address With Asphalt Patching

  • Localized Surface Failures — Areas where the surface has broken down but most of the lot is sound
  • Deep Potholes — Cavities in the pavement that need full-depth patch repair, not a thin overlay
  • Failed Previous Patches — Cold-patch repairs and shoddy hot-mix patches that didn’t last
  • Base Failures — Spots where the base has compromised; patching includes base restoration
  • Utility Cuts — Trenches and cuts left after utility work that need permanent restoration
  • Edge Breakup — Pavement edges that have crumbled and need cut-back-and-patch repair

Our Asphalt Patching Solution

  • Saw-Cut Patch Method — We saw-cut clean, squared patch boundaries in sound pavement around the failed area
  • Removal of Failed Material — Damaged asphalt is removed completely, exposing the base for inspection
  • Base Inspection and Repair — If the underlying base is wet or compromised, we add or replace aggregate before patching
  • Tack Coat — A bonding agent is applied to the vertical edges of the cut so the patch fuses to surrounding pavement
  • Hot-Mix Asphalt Installation — Hot-mix asphalt is placed in proper lifts at correct temperature
  • Roller Compaction — Patches are rolled to specified density, with attention to edges where most patches fail

What Makes Our Patches Last

  • Hot-Mix Material Only — We patch with hot-mix asphalt, not cold-patch products that fail within a season
  • Squared Cuts — Saw-cut, squared edges produce patches that hold far better than feathered or irregular shapes
  • Proper Compaction at the Edges — Edge density is the most common patch failure point, and we don’t shortcut it
  • Tack Coat on Vertical Faces — Edge bonding prevents the perimeter cracking that ruins most patches
  • Base Repair When Needed — A patch on a failed base will fail again; we address the cause when we see it

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between cold patch and hot-mix patching?

Cold patch is a temporary product that can be installed in winter or as an emergency stopgap, but it typically fails within a few months. Hot-mix asphalt patching uses the same material as new pavement, installed at proper temperature and compacted correctly — and it can last 10-15+ years when done right.

Can you patch over an existing patch that failed?

Often yes, but the failed patch needs to be saw-cut out completely first. Patching on top of a failing patch is one of the common mistakes we see; the new layer fails along with the old one. We remove the failed material, address whatever caused it, then patch correctly.

Should the area around the patch be sealcoated?

Patches are usually best left to cure for 30 days before sealcoating. After that, sealcoating helps blend the patch visually and protects both the patch and surrounding pavement from water and UV damage.

What's the smallest patching job you'll do?

We handle patching projects of nearly any size for commercial properties — from a single utility cut up to dozens of patches across a large lot. We’ll quote the project honestly based on what’s needed.
